Each month the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has a particular focus. We look at what is happening in February as well as some key prosecutions in this month’s HSE update.
HSE Focus
As England’s national lockdown is set to continue throughout February and into March, it is no surprise that the HSE’s focus will remain on inspecting Covid-security in the workplace. Their message is that businesses in all sectors could be subject to an inspection or spot check, regardless of their location. Recent communications have also suggested that those working in transport, logistics, and food production could see a particular focus.
Prosecutions
Prosecutions in January covered separate incidents involving four fatalities and 12 major life changing injuries and illnesses. These prosecutions led to fines exceeding £1million and four prison sentences spanning over six years, with one company being ordered to pay a total of £666,234 for an injury on their premises.
Commonly identified issues across January’s cases include:
- A lack of suitable and sufficient risk assessments
- Unsafe systems of work
- Provision of improper training and information
- Inadequate protective measures and supervision
